What is a Garden Pond?

Garden pond refers to man-made pond constructed in the gardens or backyards. The garden pond can be for beautifying purpose to add substance to the garden. The same can also be used as water source for the plants though this is not the main intention.

How to make a garden pond:
Instead of having a walk through on how to create one, lets know the basics. We require a “reservoir” where to store water. The reservoir is made in the form of a “hollow dug in the ground” filled with water from some source. The water can be artificially sourced via pumps or natural sources can be diverted to feed the garden pond. Of the two ways to feed the garden pond, the most common and easiest way is to feed the pond via pumps. There are also places where the water table is quite high and there, a hollow digged into the ground would have water source from underground.

Location:
The garden pond requires to be located in a strategic place. It should be visible from the balcony or the window of the bedroom when one looks out. This brings in the ambiance in the garden. The clear reflecting water is a delight to watch.

Maintenance:
Garden ponds require more constant maintenance since they would regularly be clogged with the falling leaves and other debris from the garden. This makes it mandatory to remove the “scum” that gathers regularly. One can have fishes, lilies, and other water plants to add to the beauty of the garden pond. This also enables to build an artificial ecosystem.

The garden pond can get contaminated by the fertilizers used for garden plants and that must be avoided else the water might become too toxic to be able to sustain the fishes!

Size:
A garden pond requires to be of reasonable size. It should match with the size of the garden. Big gardens can have even two or three ponds though the maintenance of the same becomes more cumbersome. One reasonably sized garden pond is ideal and mostly it is located in a very much visible center of the garden or at the beginning of the garden.

Cost:
Cost varies depending on the size, the fishes and the maintenance required.

A garden pond is a delight and adds ambiance to the garden. It is refreshing and if you are a garden lover you will love the garden pond too!
